Dragon Spring Hotel in Shenzhen, China

The Good

It's a pretty nice hotel that will live up to most Westerner's expectations for a 4-star hotel. Also, the rooms are a decent size - this is hit and miss in China, but since it is about 40 minutes outside of the city this isn't too uncommon. If you are visiting factories in Dongguan this is a pretty good location.

The Bad
If you care at all about sightseeing you are going to find this hotel out of the way - as stated above, you are about 40 minutes outside of the city (Dragon Spring is in the Longhua district - if you want shopping you probably want Luohu or Futian district as these are close to shopping and the train to Hong Kong). If you happen to be doing business with Foxconn you probably won't find a better location. If you are working with trading companies in the city you will want to stay closer to downtown (Shangri-la for 5-star, Best Western Shenzhen for a 3-3.5 star).

The staff doesn't speak any English. I mean that pretty literally, too - I generally had to have an agent with me in order to communicate with the staff. It is a fairly small hotel so this shouldn't have surprised me.

Since you aren't in the city it is not a safe place to just go wandering as a Westerner (unless you happen to speak Chinese) - be careful in the area of the Dragon Spring area. I really like to explore on my own and see new places, this wasn't a great location for doing that.

The "Western" breakfast was pretty awful. Luckily they had some fruit that allowed me to get by for the two days I stayed there.

Conclusion
If you really need to be in this area it is a decent hotel that will get you by on a quick business trip. You probably aren't going to find a lot of fun stuff to do in the Dragon Spring area, though.
