China -> Guangzhou
Novotel Baiyun Airport GuangzhouLet me give some background - recently I made the trip to Guangzhou (via Tokyo) and stayed in downtown Guangzhou. "Downtown" is about an hour from the airport. That's not the worst part - the taxi driver did not know where the Holiday Inn was and finally gave up on me (after about two hours) and left me stranded in the middle of Guangzhou with my luggage. Fortunately I found another taxi driver who knew right where the hotel was, but because of the language barrier I never would have found the hotel if I hadn't happened to have learned how to say "Holiday Inn" in chinese. Save yourself the headache and save your sanity - the Novotel Baiyun Airport is truly 5-star and the breakfast is fantastic. The executive lounge had the best cheese I have had since staying in the Grand Hyatt in Jakarta, Indonesia. Highly recommended. Price
By China's standards the hotel is expensive, but I only spent about $90 USD recently for a room on the executive floor. In my opinion the executive floor is a bargain because you get the internet and breakfast for free - upgrade! If you want to go sightseeing the location sucks - you can see the airport and that's about it. I also stayed at the Novotel Baiyun Airport recently when I had an early flight - again, a great experience (though I was disappointed that the executive lounge didn't open until 7 so I never did get to go back and raid their cheese stash). Conclusion
If you have an early flight out or a late flight in, this is the hotel for you in Guangzhou.
