Level III Restaurant

Recommended for: People staying in the JW Marriott Union Square

Not recommended for: People looking for the best bang-for-their-buck for dinner

So here's the story - I wanted to find the best value restaurant in San Francisco. We drove out to a place on Telegraph Hill called Sotto Mare after reading great reviews online. Unfortunately it wasn't clear from their website that they were closed (it seemed indefinitely, but maybe they are open now).

We were with a party of ten people who, by this point, were probably plotting my death as I was the person pushing for this obscure restaurant (which I still plan to try some day). We decided to go back to the hotel to decide where to go eat. By this time it was about 6:30 PM.

Do you know what happens when you go to a hotel with a group of ten people to decide where to eat? You eat at the hotel. Nobody felt like walking around and I knew I had lost all credibility with the group (even my faith in myself was wavering). A quick call to the hotel on the third floor sealed the deal (they had plenty of room available for our party).

Price
Hotel restaurants are always expensive and this is no exception. A hamburger runs about $17 and a steak is around $30. This doesn't sound like that much, but it's not like a Ruth's Chris-like experience so it's really not a great value.

Food
I thought the food was surprisingly good - I got a burger and it was delicious. I ordered my burger well-done (because I don't like to take chances with ground beef), but wish I had ordered it medium-well because one of the guests in our party got the perfect juiciness without too much pink. The fries were delicious.

Atmosphere
The atmosphere was really nice - it wasn't too stuffy for a large group with kids (like us), but I would feel equally comfortable taking a client here. I liked how the restaurant itself opens up to the hotel's atrium and lobby - as long as nobody from the 25'th floor is spitting on you it's a pretty cool place to eat.

Service
There was nothing wrong with the service, but it has only been a couple of days and nothing was particularly memorable about it. The food was kind of slow, but with a group as large as ours you usually expect that.

Conclusion
If you're staying in the JW Marriott Union Square and you want to take a break from the hustle and bustle of San Francisco you should try this restaurant. It probably won't change your life but it won't kill you either.
