Best Western Desert Inn - West Yellowstone, Montana

So we decided to stay in West Yellowstone which is only about a 4.5 hour drive from Salt Lake City (where we live). I was a bit concerned that the Best Western Desert Inn was in West Yellowstone, MT rather than Wyoming, but it was a great location for visiting the park.

The hotel is only about half a mile from the West Entrance to Yellowstone National Park. It is about a half hour drive to Old Faithful and an hour to Hayden Valley (where the animals are rumored to congregate, though we saw more on the drive in through the west entrance).

This Best Western is very clean and the price was right - just $70 per night with a AAA discount though that may be higher during the heavy visiting season. We chose to go the weekend before Memorial Day to avoid crowds.

The other reason we chose the Desert Inn was because it had both an indoor pool and hot tub. The hot tub, however, was an interesting green color and smelled kind of weird - we suspected that the water was stale. This problem is probably hit and miss - if you go right after they change the water you shouldn't have a problem.

The hotel also offers a free breakfast. The breakfast isn't much - just cold cereal, muffins and some fruit - but it was always enough for us to get a good start and it was nice saving a few bucks on breakfast.
