Ritz-Carlton Lake Las Vegas

First of all, let me just say that I had no idea how hot Vegas was in July. I mean hot. Walking around at midnight we were sweating.

Location
We were just passing through Vegas and didn't want to stay on the strip, but didn't realize that Lake Las Vegas is about a half an hour from the strip. The drive wasn't bad, though, and we felt the drive was well worth it.

Lake Las Vegas is an interesting place - granted we went during the beginning of the economic slowdown, but there just weren't that many people there. Of course for us that was a plus.

Baby kit
One of the coolest things the Ritz-Carlton did was bring a baby kit to our room. The baby kit was a small plastic bag with a bottle of baby lotion, baby shampoo, baby soap and a rubber ducky (in fact, even eight months later it is his favorite bath toy).

Food
The hotel has a restaurant on the first floor which was pretty good (kind of middle-of-the-road for expensive hotel food). The most memorable part was seeing the chef - none other than Louross from the previous season of Hell's Kitchen. He came out and shared some stories about Hell's Kitchen (all of them seemed to center on Jen being just as annoying in real life).

Pool & hot tub
My one complaint about virtually every hotel I've ever stayed in is that the pools close too early. I'm sure this has to do with some insurance reasons or something boring like that, but the Ritz-Carlton Lake Las Vegas has a pool and hot tub that is open all night. You want to go take a dip at 2:30 in the morning? Go for it.

Also, we arrived on a Saturday night and the pool was packed with families watching a Disney movie on a large screen setup by the pool. Very cool.

Shopping
Lake Las Vegas is an interesting place - connected to the hotel was a walkway with a lot of shops (from high to low-end) winding through. It's not huge but probably good for about an hour of walking around. It also gives you a few alternatives to the expensive food available in the hotel.

Staff
This was my first stay in a Ritz-Carlton but I was amazed at how attentive the staff was - anything we wanted they made happen. Late checkout, getting a crib in the room, forgot my toothbrush - this is a very well-managed hotel. If gambling and casinos are your thing the Ritz-Carlton probably isn't for you, but if you want a family-friendly alternative to the strip, I highly recommend this hotel.
